"That's What's Up"

BruINTENT asks you to symbolically sleep outside (in tents) and experience slight discomfort for a night, so someone else won’t have to.

Hundreds of students will sleep in tents outside on Sunset Rec!

BruINTENT focuses on educating UCLA students about the thousands of people in UCLA's backyard struggling with homelessness and hunger.

Did you know?

  • In 2008 that 80,000 homeless individuals sleep on the streets of Los Angeles each night.
  • 40% are women and over 12,000 are youth ages 12-17.
  • Recent budget cuts have rejected homeless minors from family shelters, leading to a life of crime and gang affiliation.
  • 30% of the need for food assistance goes unmet annually in Los Angeles. These numbers have only grown since the recent economic crisis.

UCLA students are addressing these issues and becoming part of the solution. We aim to inspire students to be active in their community to fight this epidemic by volunteering at soup kitchens, homeless shelters, nonprofit organizations, free clinics, and projects building homes.

BruINTENT asks students to sleep in a tent for one night as a symbolic act, while simultaneously learning about the issue through documentaries, workshops, and speakers from the community as well as making bag lunches for distribution on Skid Row.
